#21 - How To Build Resilience & Fiona Oakes Interview

Updated: Jun 16, 2021

OOO

It's been a really testing year for us all. Covid has really highlighted the frailties in our societies, in our politics, in our lives. We are facing a mental health crisis over the coming decade & for many of us, our ability to resist has been pushed to the highest degree.

Life will always through us challenges. We are not in control of our external experience and the world feels increasingly more chaotic, unpredictable and fractured.

It is becoming ever more clearer how important it is for us to find personal resistance.

In this episode, I run through my tips for building resistance for those most trying of experiences including connecting truthfully with your emotions, victim & survivor mentality and the simply power of breathing.

But that's not all! If you're in need of further inspiration on how to access that inner strength, then look no further.

This podcast also features a conversation with Fiona Oakes!

Fiona is a highly accomplished endurance runner having set three world records, including becoming the fastest woman in the world to run a marathon on all seven continents & the North Pole. She has set 5 marathon course records around the globe and in 2015, she ran 6 official marathons in 6 days across 6 continents.

This is all in spite of being told at age 14 she may never walk properly again.

She is the focus of the all inspiring documentary Running For Good - which is a must watch for any of out there looking for some inspiration and motivation.

Fiona's achievements are motivated by a deep desire to raise awareness for the plight of animals & veganism around the world, a reality she encounters on a daily basis, maintaining & working at her animal sanctuary - Tower Hill Stables.

The sanctuary homes over 600 animals whether they be retired race horses, ex-fighting dogs, or neglected and abused farm animals. They are all are given love, respect, medical care and a peaceful life. Please consider donating to them, especially during such turbulent times.

These are extracts from a conversation we recorded in October 2019 at the Norwich Vegan Festival.

She is a true example of someone who has managed to understand, recontextualise and manifest their pain & suffering into something of true positive change for the world. It was a true honour to spend time with her and I hope she can conjure up that inner fire in us all.
