#25 - Veganic Gardening & Seasonal Eating: Piers Warren Interview

Updated: Jun 16, 2021

Spring has arrived. The days are growing longer, the weather is getting brighter and hotter.

As we ease out of winter and our 3rd lockdown in the UK, people will be craving more time outdoors. Out in the forests, on the beaches, feeling the warmth of the sun and breathing the fresh air. Mowing the grass, sitting with friends, playing with the kids, getting our fingers dirty in the soil.

So to me, this seemed liked the perfect opportunity to inspire people back into their gardens (those who are lucky enough to have them) and getting closer to nature.

This week I had a conversation with Piers Warren - author, environmentalist, musician, teacher, cook and veganic veg-grower. He is the founder of WILDEYE - The International School of Wildlife Film-making.

He is hugely passionate about veganic (a combination of vegan and organic) gardening and has recently released a major new section of gardening advice on the Vegan Organic Network - which are all extracts from his book The Vegan Cook & Gardener - Growing, Storing & Cooking Delicious Healthy Food All Year Round.

We discuss a huge range of topics including:

  • What is veganic gardening?

  • What's not vegan about gardening?

  • Can we upscale veganic gardening commercially?

  • Why eating seasonally is benefitical

  • How animal agriculture can move toward vegan practices

  • How to deal with garden pests veganically

  • How people with little/no garden space, limited funds & a lack of time can begin to grow food veganically

It was an absolute pleasure to spend time with Piers. He is very knowledgeable, insightful and passionate and I just know you're going to enjoy this conversation as much as I did.

This conversation was originally recorded remotely on 7th March 2021 for Future Vegan, a show I present on Future Radio 107.8fm, the UK’s first vegan radio show.

Just a brief warning, my microphone died toward the end of the conversation so I had to rely on the Skype recording. However, it only affects a few of my sentences, and is still completely listenable.
