#8 - Seaweed & Immune Health: Simon Ranger interview

Updated: Jun 16, 2021

During lockdown, health anxieties have been rated the second highest cause of stress, only behind financial worries. We are all very aware of our immune systems right now and want to protect it as much as we can. But when people first think of foods that boost immune health, they picture kale, goji berries, avocado, spinach, turmeric, apple cider vinegar - but surely not seaweed?

Well, that's right!

High quality, nutritious seaweed supply's the body with countless essential vitamins - Vitamin A, B6, B9, B12, C, D and E, and minerals such as Iron, Copper Selenium and Zinc. Seaweed types Ascophyllan, Fucus and Pelvetia contain significantly higher levels of Copper, Iron, Zinc and Iodine than found in conventional land foods such as brown rice, whole milk, sirloin steak, lentils, and spinach.

Iodine and iron deficiencies are super common for most of us and just a small pinch of the right seaweed daily can give your immune system everything it needs.

Simon Ranger is the founder of the Seaweed Health Foundation, which he set up 2010. He created the Seagreens® brand in 1997, setting up a new standard in production of nutritious food seaweed in Europe for healthcare and food industry applications. They now sell Seagreens® in over 12 countries to many brands including Pukka Herbs, Waitrose, and Viridian.

In this conversation, we discuss:

  • The multitude of health benefits found in seaweed.

  • What we are deficient in?

  • What are the benefits from including them in our daily diets?

  • How to access high quality seaweed in the UK?

  • How do I get it into my diet?

  • What if I don't like the taste?

Simon is highly knowledgeable about his work and he really helps give simply solutions to often overwhelming questions (I find). I felt more empowered after I spoke to him and I feel this is the impact of his words. No matter who you are, there's something in this conversation for you!

This conversation was recorded remotely mid 2020 for Future Vegan, a show I present on Future Radio 107.8fm, the UK’s first vegan radio show.
